Three years after their first meeting, Marvin Hagler and Mustafa Hamsho square off once more for the Middleweight Championship. Hamsho opens up a cut over his own left eye when throwing his head between Hagler's gloves in an opening round that the challenger wins. Hagler comes back to light Hamsho up with big shots in the second round before flooring him for the first time in his career with a pair of left hands and a right hook in the third. Hamsho beats the count and bravely slugs it out with the champion until a Hagler right hook puts him down again. As Referee Arthur Mercante is counting him out, Hamsho's corner comes into the ring to stop the fight.

In a battle between middleweights who have not lost in five years, Middleweight Champion Marvin Hagler takes on Mustafa Hamsho on the undercard of a heavyweight title fight between Mike Weaver and James Tillis. Hagler is cut over the right eye by a clash of heads in the third round but returns the favor by opening cuts over both of Hamsho's eyes by the end of the fourth. Hagler gives Hamsho a systematic beating, but the challenger refuses to go and repeatedly sticks his tongue out at the champion. Finally, with Hamsho taking punishment on the ropes, Referee Octavio Meyran stops the fight in the eleventh.

"Britain's Alan Minter, his hopes for another title shot frustrated Saturday by a split decision loss to Mustafa Hamsho, said he did all he could to win the fight. Minter used his right jab effectively throuout the middleweight elimination fight, but the relentless attack of Hamsho proved the difference in the scoring. In the 4th round a good left hook by Hamsho seemed to shake Minter but he responded with effective right and left combinations. The 5th was Minter's best round as he hurt Hamsho with a strong left hook followed by two right hands. Both fighters went toe to toe until the bell sounded to end the round. Minter was cut on the cheek in the 8th round as Hamsho began to dominate the fight." -Associated Press
