Paul Williams avenges the first defeat of his career with an emphatic knockout over Carlos Quintana in an immediate rematch for the WBO Welterweight Championship. After Williams hurts him with a one-two midway through the opening round, Quintana tries to hold on, but Williams lands another left hand that drops him onto all fours along the ropes. Quintana beats the count, but Williams knocks him into the ropes with another straight left. Two more lefts have Quintana sagging into the corner and collapsing to the canvas, tackling Williams with him, as Referee Eddie Claudio jumps in to stop the massacre.

WBO Welterweight Champion Paul Williams suffers the first loss of his career when he is out boxed by the slick southpaw Carlos Quintana. Quintana starts fast, schooling Williams and drilling him with power shots over the first third of the fight. Williams mounts a mid-rounds rally, but Quintana finishes strong down the stretch, cutting Williams over both eyes. After twelve rounds, Quintana takes a close but unanimous decision to lift Williams's title.

In a highly anticipated battle between undefeated Puerto Ricans, Miguel Cotto moves up to welterweight to face Carlos Quintana for the vacant WBA title. After splitting the first four rounds on all three judges' scorecards, Cotto knocks Quintana to the canvas with a huge left hook to the side near the end of round five. Quintana gets up only to be hammered to the mat for a second time. Shocked by the suddenly brutal pounding he is taking, Quintana quits on his stool before the sixth round.

Thurman's power was the difference, flooring Quintana in the first with a body shot and overwhelming him in the fourth. Afterwards, Thurman called out Mayweather again, while Quintana promptly announced his retirement.
