Two subsequent fights were organized to crown a new champion (see Larry Mosley vs. Miguel Figueroa and Larry Mosley vs. Golden Johnson), but both ended in draws and the belt remained vacant. In round 10, Williams cornered an apparently exhausted Matthysse and unleashed a barrage of unanswered punches that forced the referee to call a halt to the bout.
