When Kirk Johnson injures himself in training two weeks prior to their fight, Heavyweight Champion Lennox Lewis agrees to take on mandatory challenger Vitali Klitschko. Klitschko nearly shocks the world when he badly rocks Lewis in the second round; however, Lewis hangs on and comes back to rip Klitschko's left eye wide open with a right hand in the third. After the titanic struggle between the big men continues for three more rounds, the ringside doctor informs Referee Lou Moret that the fight must be stopped due to the cut. Behind on points, Lewis escapes with a technical knockout and eventually retires rather than face Klitschko again.
