I Love New York: Larry Holmes vs. Mike Weaver
New York, NY
Heavyweight lbs
Harold Valan
WBC Heavyweight Championship
Larry Holmes hangs on to his WBC Championship and undefeated status in a thriller against unheralded Mike Weaver. After controlling the opening rounds, a mouthy Holmes wins a back-and-forth third round. Stunned early in the fourth, Weaver comes back and appears to send Holmes to a glove, the champion holding himself up by the ropes with his free hand; however, Referee Harold Valan fails to call it a knockdown. Holmes regains control in the second half of the fight until he starts talking to Weaver in the tenth, to which the challenger responds by wobbling him in the final seconds. With the crowd now behind him, Weaver trades bombs with Holmes the entire eleventh round until a Holmes uppercut collapses him sideways into the ropes with only seconds left. Weaver barely pulls himself to his feet by the ropes in time to be saved by the bell, but he is finished as Holmes beats on him against the ropes in the twelfth. With the challenger failing to punch back, Valan stops a heavyweight classic.
