When former Heavyweight Champion Joe Louis dies of a heart attack the morning after his title defense against Trevor Berbick, current Heavyweight Champion Larry Holmes makes his next defense in Louis's hometown of Detroit against another former champion, Leon Spinks. Holmes brawls with Spinks from the outset and starts dropping dozens of unanswered shots on the challenger against the ropes in the third round, finally sending Spinks crashing into the ropes and onto his back on the canvas. Although Spinks beats the count, Holmes continues to brutally punish him until Referee Richard Steele stops the massacre.
