A year and a half after originally being scheduled to fight for the WBC Super Lightweight Championship, Kostya Tszyu and Miguel Angel Gonzalez finally square off for the vacant title. Gonzalez starts well in the opening round before Tszyu starts catching him with big shots in the second. Referee Frank Santore Jr. docks Gonzalez a point for repeatedly using his shoulder against Tszyu in the fourth round. In the fifth, Tszyu hurts Gonzalez with a straight right hand that wobbles him into the ropes and proceeds to tear into him. He snaps Gonzalez's head back against the ropes with vicious left hooks to end the seventh. After Tszyu staggers him into a corner early in the tenth, Gonzalez's corner finally stops the massacre.
