Marvin Hagler returns home to Boston with the Middleweight Championship and makes his first defense against undefeated Venezuelan Fulgencio Obelmejias. Hagler tears into the taller challenger and eventually sends Obelmejias to the canvas with an uppercut and a left hand in the sixth round. Obelmeijas beats the count but continues to take heavy artillery until Referee Octavio Meyran stops the fight when the challenger stumbles into the ropes in the opening seconds of the eighth round.
