Alexis Arguello captures his first world title in dramatic fashion when he comes from behind to knock out WBA Featherweight Champion Ruben Olivares in the thirteenth round. Olivares stuns Arguello with the first right hand of the fight, but Arguello returns the favor with a left hook in the second. After a hellacious seventh round in which both men fire nonstop punches, Olivares takes over for a long stretch, winning every round by outworking Arguello and landing the more head-turning punches. Rather than coast to a points victory, Olivares tries to put Arguello away and runs into a huge left hook in the thirteenth that puts him flat on his back. Although he gets to his feet by the count of nine, Olivares is dropped again by an uppercut. This time, Referee Dick Young counts the valiant champion out.
