The two share a billing in which Whitaker makes the first defense of his unified crown against Kronk Gym pupil Anthony Jones. Despite Camacho losing in controversial fashion on the undercard, Whitaker takes care of business by standing his ground and out fighting Jones for twelve rounds en route to a near-shutout on the scorecards.

WBC Super Featherweight Champion Azumah Nelson moves up to 135 pounds to challenge WBC and IBF Lightweight Champion Pernell Whitaker in a bout between men with only two losses between them. Whitaker takes control early, even grabbing Nelson in a headlock and hitting him with a punch behind his back in the second round. Way behind on points, Nelson goes for the knockout in the championship rounds but comes up short. Despite Referee Mills Lane docking him a point for continuously grabbing Nelson's leg in the final round, Whitaker wins a unanimous decision, handing the challenger his first defeat in eight years.

In a classic chess match, Whitaker pulls away from McGirt over the second half of the bout as a left shoulder injury limits the champion. A rally in the championship rounds is not enough for McGirt to overcome the deficit as Whitaker captures the title.
