In a fight that sees him average 130 punches a round, Ouma manages to out work Phillips despite taking some heavy thunder in return. Ouma stuns Phillips in the second and third rounds with straight left hands, but Phillips lands the bigger punches in several rounds. After eight rounds of standing and trading, Ouma staggers Phillips with a straight left and doubles him over with a body shot, prompting Referee Eddie Obregon to step in and issue a standing eight-count. In the end, Ouma wins a unanimous decision in a true classic.

Kassim Ouma vs. Verno Phillips I

In a rematch of their slugfest from 2001, Verno Phillips defends his IBF Super Welterweight Championship against Kassim Ouma. Phillips starts off well in the early rounds before Ouma knocks his mouthpiece out with a right hook in the third. From there, Ouma takes over the middle rounds until Phillips mounts a comeback to seemingly pull even heading down the stretch. The challenger proves to have more gas in the tank and closes the show by dominating the championship rounds, having Phillips hurt and staggering around the ring more than once.
