Chuvalo rattles Ali several times over the first half of the bout, even stopping to taunt the former World Champion during exchanges, but Ali answers with punishing combinations over the second half of the contest. Despite Ali vowing to drop Chuvalo for the first time in his career, the result is the same as the first encounter, with Ali failing to take Chuvalo off his feet but taking a wide unanimous decision win under the 5-point-must system.

The beginning of the end came a minute into the third round, when Foreman crashed his left fist against Chuvalo's chin. It seemed for a moment that the Canadian must go down and, indeed, the seat of his royal-blue velvet trunks did touch the ropes for an instant. Unlike many young fighters, Foreman did not step back to admire the effect of his work. He followed the hook instantly with a succession of rights and lefts that drove Chuvalo's helpless hulk reeling about the ring. The young fighter was landing punches at the rate of almost one a second, and he kept the fusillade going for a full 40 seconds. Then, with Chuvalo's manager, Irving Ungerman, mounting the ring steps, intent on ending the slaughter, Referee Arthur Mercante stepped between the two men and signaled that it was all over. When Heavyweight Champion Muhammad Ali refuses to apologize for his statement, "I ain't got no quarrel with them Viet Cong," he is unable to find a state to house his planned defense against Ernie Terrell. Promoter Bob Arum is left with no choice but to take Ali to Canada to face George Chuvalo on short notice. Chuvalo comes to fight and punishes Ali with a relentless body attack in the early rounds, but Ali solves the game challenger and out boxes him over the second half of the fight to win a convincing unanimous decision.
