The Battle Of Champions: Wilfred Benitez vs. Thomas Hearns

New Orleans, LA

WBC Super Welterweight Championship lbs

Octavio Meyran

Thomas Hearns captures a title in a second weight class when he moves up to 154 pounds to take on WBC Super Welterweight Champion Wilfred Benitez. The fighters stare each other down long before the introductions until Benitez shoves Hearns away. Hearns gets off to a fast start, dominating the first four rounds, but loses a bogus point when Referee Octavio Meyran docks him for briefly holding Benitez behind the head after a missed punch in the fourth. Benitez catches a right hand from Hearns in the fifth and falls onto his gloves. Another right from Hearns buckles Benitez's legs in the sixth. In the ninth round, Benitez lands a jab on an off-balance Hearns, sending the challenger stumbling onto his rear for an official knockdown. After they trade big shots in the tenth, Hearns out boxes the timid Benitez down the stretch and wins a majority decision to become champion.
