World War II: Pipino Cuevas vs. Thomas Hearns
Detroit, MI

Stanley Christodoulou
WBA Welterweight Championship
Undefeated knockout artist Thomas Hearns wins his first title in front of a hometown crowd in Detroit when he takes on WBA Welterweight Champion Pipino Cuevas. Standing a half-foot taller than Cuevas, Hearns ends the champion's four-year reign in just two short rounds. Hearns has Cuevas stumbling after a right hand in the opening round and then freezes him with a huge right hand in the second. Cuevas wobbles before Hearns hammers him face down on the canvas with another right. The champion courageously beats the count, but Referee Stanley Christodoulou refuses to let him take any more punishment.
