Undefeated heavyweights collide when Tommy Morrison gets his first crack at gold against WBO Champion Ray Mercer. Morrison jumps out to an early lead on the scorecards, splitting Mercer's lip open with an uppercut and hurting him in the third round. The champion responds by hurting Morrison in the fourth round and then scoring perhaps the most brutal knockout in heavyweight history when he crashes a dozen unanswered punches across the face of Morrison against the ropes in the fifth. Referee Tony Perez is disastrously late stepping in to save Morrison from more punishment.
