Roberto Duran vs Pipino Cuevas

Sports Arena, Los Angeles, California, USA
James Jen Kin
Cuevas' last fight was 14 months earlier when he lost to Roger Stafford in the 1981 Ring Magazine Upset of the Yeat. Duran lost to Kirkland Laing four months earlier in the 1982 Ring Magazine Upset of the Year. Many believed both fighters were washed up. Duran and Cuevas were guaranteed $50,000 apiece plus a percentage of the closed circuit TV revenue. A capacity crowd of 16,824 produced a gate of $408,000. After the fight, WBA junior middleweight champion Davey Moore wondered, "Was that Duran looking so good or Cuevas so bad?" He got his answer six months later when Duran knocked him out in eight rounds.
