Big Red October: Tomasz Adamek vs. Paul Briggs II
Chicago, IL
175 lbs
Timothy Adams
WBC Light Heavyweight Championship
Paul Briggs experiences déjà vu as he loses a second majority decision to undefeated WBC Light Heavyweight Champion Tomasz Adamek in the same city as their first epic confrontation albeit controversially this time. Adamek is in control in the first round until he walks into a left hook from Briggs that puts the champion on the canvas for the first time in his career. He comes back to cut Briggs over the left eye - just like in the first fight - but this time with a right hand in the second round. Briggs, however, starts to take over for several rounds by landing jarring right hands and busting up Adamek's nose once more. In the eighth round, Adamek hurts Briggs with a right hand before they slug it out in epic fashion for two rounds. Adamek drops Briggs onto his hands and knees with a low blow in the ninth round and hurts the challenger again once they continue before being docked a point for another low blow by Referee Timothy Adams. After losing the next two rounds, Adamek - bleeding from the left eye, nose and mouth - comes up big in the twelfth and does enough in the eyes of the judges to escape with his title.
