Fury In The Desert: Oscar De La Hoya vs. Oba Carr
Las Vegas, NV
147 lbs
Richard Steele
WBC Welterweight Championship
Taking what is expected to be something of a tuneup ahead of his super fight with Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya instead finds himself in a good fight when he defends the WBC Welterweight title against Oba Carr. De La Hoya starts off fast, hurting Carr with a jab and dropping him to his knees with a left hook in the opening round. Carr comes back to out box Oscar and win some rounds but doesn't do himself any favors by losing two points - deducted prematurely by Referee Richard Steele - for an accidental head butt and low blow in the seventh round. De La Hoya finally closes the show in round 11, knocking Carr down with a huge left hook. Carr beats the count but wobbles into Steele, who stops the fight.
