Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez makes the fourth defense of his crown against tough Irishman Matthew Macklin on St. Patrick's Day in Madison Square Garden. After Martinez staggers him with a straight left hand in the second round, Macklin comes back over the next several rounds, culminating in a slug out with the champion in the fifth. While Martinez is leaning on him in the seventh, Macklin lands a right hand that makes the champion's glove touch the canvas for an official knockdown as called by Referee Eddie Cotton. Surprisingly behind on the scorecards, Martinez commits to going on the attack down the stretch of the fight, knocking Macklin's mouthpiece out with a right hook at the end of the tenth round that sends the challenger staggering across the ring. Martinez closes the show in the eleventh, dropping Macklin on his rear with a straight left hand. Macklin gets up, bleeding from both eyes, but Martinez lands a left hook that sends him sliding under the ropes just before the bell. Although Macklin beats the count, his corner stops the fight between rounds.
