Diamond Elite: Sergio Martinez vs. Sergiy Dzinziruk
Mashantucket, CT
160 lbs
Arthur Mercante Jr.
When HBO turns down Sebastian Zbik as an acceptable opponent for him, Sergio Martinez is stripped of the WBC Middleweight Championship for instead facing undefeated tactician Sergiy Dzinziruk. After out jabbing Dzinziruk for the first three rounds, Martinez hurts him with a left hand in the fourth. Dzinziruk's knee touches down on the canvas for the first knockdown of his career. They trade big shots in the fifth until two left hands from Martinez put Dzinziruk on the seat of his pants. Dzinziruk comes back to land hard shots in the seventh, but a one-two from Martinez in the eighth rattles his head and drops him onto his knees and face. The valiant Dzinziruk gets up but runs into another left hand from the Middleweight Champion. Dzinziruk doubles over and drops onto his hands and knees but again makes it back to his feet. Martinez blasts him with several left hands and a right hook to put him on his rear again, and Referee Arthur Mercante Jr. jumps in to stop the fight, giving Martinez a highlight reel win.
