The Comeback: Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Kevin Howard

Worcester, MA

Fighting for the first time since retiring due to a detached retina two years prior, "Sugar" Ray Leonard's comeback is over as fast as it begins. Leonard takes on largely unknown contender Kevin Howard, who nearly shocks the world with his performance. Just as Leonard begins to shuffle his feet and wind his arm up, he runs into a counter right hand from Howard in the fourth round that puts him on the canvas for the first time in his career. Leonard recovers and starts trying to blast Howard out with power shots over the next several rounds, stopping to trade words after the seventh. After eight hard-fought rounds, Leonard finally wobbles Howard with a left hook in the ninth. Howard tries to hang on for dear life but continuously takes power shots on his feet until Referee Dick Flaherty intervenes to stop the contest a bit prematurely. Despite the victory, Leonard is disgusted with his performance and once again announces his retirement after the fight.
