Josesito Lopez was a last-minute opponent after Ortiz's rematch with Berto fell out twice, the first time due to an injury and, more recently, a positive test for PEDs by Berto. After beating Lopez, Ortiz was already scheduled to fight in a PPV main event against Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 15, but Lopez, like Randall Bailey a few weeks prior, apparently did not get the message that he was there merely to lose. The two men engaged in a hellacious slugfest that ended prematurely when Lopez shattered Ortiz's jaw in the ninth round, and Victor was unable (or refused) to continue.
