WBC Welterweight Championship
After more than a year-long layoff, undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. returns to the ring to challenge Victor Ortiz for the WBC Welterweight Championship. Mayweather quickly settles into form, winning rounds off the young champion, who grows frustrated and intentionally throws his head into Mayweather in the fourth round. After Referee Joe Cortez is through docking him a point, Ortiz tries to hug it out with Mayweather. Mayweather reacts by clocking him with a left hook and a straight right hand, flooring the champion. Invoking the rule to protect oneself at all times, Cortez has no choice but to count Ortiz out. After the bout, a testy Mayweather gets into a spat with HBO commentator Larry Merchant.
