"Wallace (Bud) Smith of Cincinnati kept his lightweight crown Wednesday night on an unanimous 15 round decision over ex-champion Jimmy Carter of New York in a thrilling return bout. Carter tried to force the fighting in the early rounds and tried to make Smith back-pedal so that he could hit Bud with long rights to the body and chin. But Smith refused to play Carter's game. He took the offensive and was successful in many of the rounds in forcing the ex-champion to go backwards and break up his shuffling attack. There were no knockdowns but Smith almost went to the deck three times in the 13th round when he was staggered by a left hook and then bombarded about the ring. But the excellent condition of Bud enabled him to fight on. Carter also gave a demonstration of ruggedness. He suffered a reopening of a cut on his right eyebrow in the 3rd round. And that eye was closed tightly shut by the end of the 9th session." -United Press

"Lightweight champion Joe Brown registered his eighth straight win Wednesday night when Dr. Alexander Robbins examined ex-champ Wallace (Bud) Smith in his corner after the end of the 10th round and waved his hands to signify that the bout be stopped. Smith was bleeding from a cut inside his mouth, and he claimed he had been unable to see properly from his left eye after a blow in the 4th round. Brown did a fast-stepping weave from side to side, avoiding Bud's attempted rushes, and sharp-shooting at him with long left jabs and straight rights. Smith's legs appeared to be gone. At 27, he no longer was able to step in with his old crushers against a fast-moving opponent." -United Press

"The 30 year old Joe Brown from New Orleans, finished with a whirlwind rally in the late rounds to gain a split decision and lift Wallace (Bud) Smith's lightweight title last night. Brown, the target for Smith's pursuit during most of the nationally televised 15 rounder, smashed the 27 year old Cincinnati titleholder to the floor twice in the 14th round. Smith rose from the canvas weary and dazed and a target for Brown's right in the final round. But the finishing right never came. Smith, who initiated most of the aggression before the big crowd, had no argument with the decision. However, it was labeled "hometown" by Smith's trainer, Adolph Ritacco." -Associated Press
