In the final fight of his career before his tragic murder, Vernon Forrest reclaims the WBC Super Welterweight Championship in a rematch with Sergio Mora. This time around, Forrest puts a beating on Mora, stunning him with a right hand in the fifth round and hammering him until the bell. At the end of the seventh, Mora walks into a left hook that buckles his knees. Although his knee does not touch the canvas, Referee Vic Drakulich calls Mora down anyway. Mora lands a hard right hand in the ninth, but Forrest responds by nearly beating him through the ropes. Forrest finishes strong in the twelfth, landing big shots. Mora finishes the fight on his feet but loses a landslide unanimous decision on the scorecards.

On the weekend of Mexico's bicentennial, Sergio Mora attempts to become the first fighter of Mexican descent to best Shane Mosley. Instead, Mosley is the aggressor albeit a sloppy one throughout while Mora fights like a man afraid to be knocked out, picking spots that are few and far between. After twelve rounds, the judges inexplicably give Mora enough rounds for him to salvage a draw in a fight that he clearly has lost.

Sergio Mora becomes the first fighter from The Contender series to win a world title when he lifts the WBC Super Welterweight Championship from Vernon Forrest over twelve rounds. Forrest starts well and commands the early rounds until Mora stuns him with a right hand in the sixth. Staring Forrest down following the seventh, Mora out works the tiring champion over the second half of the fight, shouts at him after the bell to end the twelfth and takes home the win by majority decision.
