In the prelim to the main event of an eight bout card at Aqua Caliente Casino in California, Devon Alexander of St. Louis, Missouri won the vacant WBC Light Welterweight title with an eighth round stoppage of former WBC Light Welterweight champ Junior Witter, Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Alexander, who is only 22 years old, saw his record improve to 19-0 with 12 kayos. Witter was stopped for the first time in 42 bouts and lost an opportunity for an all-British, WBC-WBA unification bout with Amir Khan. Referee Lou Moret went to Witter's corner after the eighth round to warn him for excessive holding, whereupon Witter quit on his stool, prompting the chant "Witter the quitter" from the crowd. Witter explained after the bout "I felt the bout was quite even. I had a hairline fracture to my left hand six months ago. It felt like I reinjured it in the fourth round so I tried to switch up. I'd start with my right and try to finish with my left but I could not."

Undefeated Tim Bradley dethrones WBC Super Lightweight Champion Junior Witter in England in impressive fashion. After some tactical opening rounds, Bradley lands a bomb of an overhand right that crashes Witter onto his back. Although Witter beats the count, he is overwhelmed the rest of the fight as Bradley lands the more telling blows in every round. Despite the judges seeing a curiously close fight, Bradley wins the title by a split decision.

Undefeated IBF Super Lightweight Champion Zab Judah makes the first defense of his title against undefeated Junior Witter on the undercard of a bout between Mike Tyson and Lou Savarese. Fighting on only nine days' notice, Witter tries to psyche Judah out by doing a flip during the introductions and producing a shove from the champion. Witter proceeds to drop his hands and posture throughout the bout, allowing Judah to bag rounds. In the fifth, Judah knocks Witter's mouthpiece out with a big left hand. By the eleventh, Judah starts landing hard shots and mocking Witter by doing some grandstanding of his own. After twelve rounds, Judah wins a wide unanimous decision.
