In just his sixteenth professional fight, undefeated Pernell Whitaker travels to France to take on French-based WBC Lightweight Champion Jose Luis Ramirez. Whitaker out boxes the champion for the first four rounds and beats him to the punch in many of the later rounds, including the twelfth, but loses a highly controversial split decision. Upon hearing that he has lost for the first time, Whitaker collapses in tears.

Gym mates and friends with more than 160 professional fights between them collide when undefeated WBA Lightweight Champion Julio Cesar Chavez attempts to unify titles with WBC Champion Jose Luis Ramirez. After some terrific exchanges in the opening rounds, Chavez catches Ramirez with a sharp counter right hand in the fourth that buckles the WBA Champion's knees and nearly makes his glove touch the canvas. From there, Chavez starts to pull away by punishing Ramirez with constant right hands. After a clash of heads in the eleventh round, Referee Richard Steele has to stop the fight due to a bad cut on Ramirez and dock Chavez a point according to the bizarre WBC rules. To no surprise, Chavez wins a technical decision to annex the WBA title.
