The fight was televised live by ABC on Wide World of Sports.
Davis entered the fight ranked No. 2 at lightweight by the WBC.
This was Davis' second shot at the WBC lightweight title. In his first attempt, he lost to Jim Watt by a 15-round unanimous decision on June 7, 1980.
Rosario floored Davis in the second and 12th rounds.

The Associated Press reported:
A crowd of 15,000 braved pouring rain to see Watt, always calm and collected, outbox former Olympic champion Davis, who was unbeaten in 13 previous professional contests. . . . Davis, a narrow pre-fight favorite, was slow to settle in front of the shouting Scottish crowd. Southpaw Watt completely dominated the opening half of the bout and although the challenger produced some telling late blows, the result was not in doubt.
According to the AP, Watt was paid $1 million and Davis $300,000.
