Guzman weighed in an astounding 9 lbs. over the lightweight limit, making only Funeka eligible for the vacant IBF 135 lb. title.  For Funeka, insult was added to injury when he failed the post-fight drug test for a diuretic he used to make weight.

Guzman starts fast, winning the opening rounds with his power shots, but Funeka bloodies his nose and eye by the fourth round, turning Guzman's face into a crimson mask. In the eighth, Funeka hurts Guzman with a hard right hand, but Guzman survives the round. Down the stretch, Funeka dominates the bout as Guzman's trunks become soaked in his own blood; however, after twelve rounds, the judges shockingly rule the fight a majority draw.

After his fight with Joan Guzman is canceled due to Guzman's inability to make weight, WBA, IBF and WBO Lightweight Champion Nate Campbell forfeits his titles on the scales for the same offense prior to facing Ali Funeka. Coming in heavier, Campbell hurts Funeka with a right hand in the second round and fells him with another one. Funeka recovers well and takes over the fight in the middle rounds, bloodying Campbell's nose, but Campbell comes on strong again in the championship rounds, hurting Funeka with another right hand. Funeka tries to hold on but falls to his knees and into the ropes for another knockdown. After twelve rounds, Funeka is devastated to hear that he has lost his chance at the titles when Campbell edges him out by a majority decision.
