Fighting on the undercard of the bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Victor Ortiz, Saul Alvarez makes the second defense of his WBC Super Welterweight Championship against Alfonso Gomez. A jab from Alvarez drops Gomez in the opening round, but the challenger comes back to land clean right hands in the third. In the sixth round, Alvarez frees Gomez with an uppercut and a right hand. While Margarito knocks out Kermit Cintron for the second time on the undercard, Cotto defends his title against Alfonso Gomez of The Contender fame, who upset Arturo Gatti over the summer. Gomez stands no chance against Cotto, going down three times before the ringside doctor advises Referee Randy Neumann to stop the bout after the fifth round.

Arturo Gatti's thrilling career comes to an end against unlikely foe Alfonso Gomez of The Contender. Gomez takes Gatti to school for six rounds, consistently beating him to the punch. In the seventh round, he batters Gatti into the ropes with a volley of shots, finally sending him down and splitting his lip wide open with a right hand that prompts New Jersey State Athletic Commissioner Larry Hazzard to jump into the ring and stop the fight. Beaten down for the last time, Gatti announces his retirement before leaving the arena.
