Pernell Whitaker wins a title in his third division when he captures the IBF Super Lightweight Championship from Rafael Pineda. Whitaker out boxes the bigger man as expected but also manages to out punch him, taking a big lead over the first half of the bout, widened even more by Referee Joe Cortez docking Pineda a point for a low blow in the sixth. Whitaker picks up two more points in the eighth when he drops Pineda to his knees with a body shot and the challenger responds with another costly low blow. Pineda comes on strong in the last three rounds, but he is too far behind to catch Whitaker, who takes the title home by a landslide unanimous decision.
