Undisputed Lightweight Champion Pernell Whitaker comes home to Norfolk to defend his titles against undefeated challenger Poli Diaz of Spain. Diaz comes out aggressive in the first round but runs into a left hand from Whitaker that puts him down on a glove in the second. After battering Diaz with power shots throughout the fifth round, Whitaker drops the challenger into a sitting position in a corner of the ring with a right hook in the seventh. Totally outclassed, Diaz fights dirty in the twelfth, butting Whitaker twice and throwing him to the canvas but loses a landslide unanimous decision on the scorecards.
