Vitali Klitschko vs. Juan Carlos Gomez
Stuttgart, Germany
Heavyweight lbs
Daniel Van de Wiele
WBC Heavyweight Championship
WBC Heavyweight Champion Vitali Klitschko makes the first defense of his second reign against blown-up cruiserweight Cuban southpaw Juan Carlos Gomez. Although Gomez wins the opening round, Klitschko takes over with his jab and straight right hand and has the challenger bleeding from a cut over his right eye by the fifth round. Klitschko also suffers a cut on his forehead from a clash of heads in the sixth but lands a right hand in the seventh that wobbles Gomez into the ropes, where the challenger takes a knee. The champion again freezes Gomez with shots at the end of the eighth round before they clash heads again in the ninth, resulting in a cut over Gomez's left eye. Referee Daniel Van de Wiele apparently believes it to be an intentional butt by Klitschko and docks the champion a point. Klitschko ends the fight moments later, however, dropping Gomez onto his hands and knees with a right hand. Although he beats the count, Gomez continues to take heavy punishment until he finally turns his back on the champion, prompting Van de Wiele to stop the bout.
