Kirk Johnson blows a chance at John Ruiz's WBA Heavyweight Championship by getting himself disqualified. Dropping Ruiz with a low blow, Johnson loses a point in the opening round but does not lose another when committing the same infraction in the fourth. Ruiz responds by trying to head butt Johnson, prompting Referee Joe Cortez to threaten to disqualify both men. Johnson again fells Ruiz with a borderline low blow in the seventh, losing his second point for the same foul. Just when Johnson appears to be taking control of the bout, Ruiz hurts him badly with a right hand in the ninth round and appears to score two knockdowns off of it, neither of which is ruled so by Cortez. Another borderline low blow in the tenth ends the fight as Cortez has no choice but to disqualify Johnson.
