Joe Frazier vs. Oscar Bonavena I
New York, NY
Heavyweight lbs
Mark Conn
Undefeated knockout artist Joe Frazier is knocked down and forced to go the distance for the first time in his professional career when he takes on the tough Oscar Bonavena. Despite being staggered by a left hook at the end of the first round, Bonavena comes back to floor Frazier with a huge right hand in the second. Frazier gets up on unsteady legs and is sent stumbling onto his rear by a left hook from Bonavena. Somehow, Frazier recovers and proceeds to tear into Bonavena with heavy thunder for the rest of the bout, rocking him with a left hook and right hand in the fifth. Bonavena manages to light Frazier up once more in the tenth and final round, but Frazier has enough rounds in the bag to get the split decision victory.
