WBO Super Middleweight Championship
Undefeated WBO Super Middleweight Champion Joe Calzaghe defends his title against notoriously dirty fighter Kabary Salem in a rough-and-tumble affair. In the opening round, Salem hits Calzaghe low, and both fighters get upset about a clash of heads. Another meeting of the minds in the second round results in Calzaghe getting cut and prompting him to go after the challenger with both fists blazing. After Calzaghe complains about yet another head butt in the third round, Referee Paul Thomas docks Salem a point. Calzaghe goes after Salem in the fourth but walks into a huge right hand that puts him on his backside. Although he beats the count, Calzaghe fights timidly for a few rounds before going back to work. Eventually, Calzaghe also loses a point for using his head in the eleventh round before getting credit for a knockdown in the twelfth when Salem eats a left hand and falls after missing a punch. After twelve painful rounds, Calzaghe wins retains his title via wide unanimous decision.
