Hasim Rahman inherits the WBC Heavyweight title after Vitali Klitschko pulls out of a proposed bout between the two on multiple occasions and eventually retires. Rahman's first defense comes against James Toney, who has relinquished the WBA title he won from John Ruiz due to steroid use. Rahman and Toney try to instill some life in the increasingly barren division but manage only to draw with one another.
