The Grand Slam Of Boxing: Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Greg Haugen
Mexico City, Mexico
140 lbs
Joe Cortez
WBC Super Lightweight Championship
Greg Haugen ventures into enemy territory to take on undefeated WBC Super Lightweight Champion Julio Cesar Chavez in Mexico City. Enraged by Haugen's remarks about his opposition, Chavez refuses to touch gloves before the fight and drops Haugen with a pair of right hands just seconds into the first round. By the end of the second, Haugen's nose is bleeding and he is taking a vicious beating from the champion. Looking to collect on a knockout bet with promoter Don King, Chavez wobbles Haugen with a right hand early in the fifth and puts him down on a knee with a combination. Haugen beats the count but is battered into the ropes until Referee Joe Cortez stops the massacre, suffering the first stoppage loss of his career.
