Calderon was undefeated, 34-0 with a single draw, and was making his seventh defense of his WBO 108 lb. title when he stepped in the ring against the powerful Segura, the WBA 108 lb. champion. Calderon was unable to keep Segura from mauling him against the ropes and eventually succumbed in the eighth to a series of vicious body shots.
