Pernell Whitaker vs. Gary Jacobs
Atlantic City, NJ
147 lbs
Ron Lipton
WBC Welterweight Championship
Pernell Whitaker defends his WBC Welterweight Championship against tough challenger Gary Jacobs. Jacobs goes punch for punch with the champion for the first four rounds before Whitaker begins to take over in the middle rounds. In the eleventh, Whitaker misses a wild punch and crashes to the canvas, which Referee Ron Lipton incorrectly rules a knockdown. An angry Whitaker looks to batter the challenger for the remainder of the fight. So exhausted is Jacobs in the twelfth that he loses a point for incessant holding. Once Lipton makes him stop clinching, Jacobs is dropped onto his face with a big left hand by Whitaker. Whitaker tries to close the show and runs through Jacobs with a straight left hand that floors him with only seconds remaining, but Lipton lets the fight go to the scorecards as soon as he makes it back to his feet. The scores are academic as Whitaker wins a wide unanimous decision.
