Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Sam Girard
Ballys Park Place Hotel Casino, Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA
Earl Morton
This was Mayweather's first professional fight with his father in his corner. Floyd Sr. had been in prison for drug trafficking. The first round was mostly an evenly fought defensive gem, with Mayweather primarily moving forward and Girard blocking incoming jabs with some counter attempts. Mayweather scored a flash knockdown at 2:58 of the round with a counter left hook. Up at the count of two, Girard finished the round with a small mouse under the left eye. Mayweather was warned for a low blow early in round two. Girard wobbled Mayweather with his best shot, an overhand right, with Mayweather along the ropes. Girard then began working to the body as Mayweather tried to hold with a minute left in the round. Girard tried to slug it out with Mayweather on the inside, standing in front of him and going toe-to-toe. Girard was knocked down by a short right to the head at 2:12 of the second second. Mayweather then walked Girard down, backing him up and knocking him out with a straight right at 2:45 of the second. Girard fought two more times, losing a ten-round decision to Paul Spadafora and a six-round decision to Lemuel Nelson. The noteworthy statistic is Mayweather and Spadafora had a combined record of 35-0 when Girard fought them in 1998. 16 years later, Mayweather and Spadafora had a combined record of 94-1-1, making Girard's losses to them credible.
