Super Featherweight World Championship
"Sandy Saddler strutted into his seventh year as world featherweight champion today while irate fans jeered in vain. Saddler from New York City defended his crown Wednesday night by scoring a TKO over Flash Elorde of the Philippines when the contest was halted in the 13th round because of the Islander's bleeding left eye. The bout, which started as a fairly slow affair, was a bloody rhubarb from the 5th round. Elorde, who spent a good part of the night trying to keep his face away from Saddler's grinding head, began to bleed from the mouth in that heat. The damaging cut began to appear above his left eye in the 7th, but in the 9th the artistic southpaw started the blood flowing from Saddler's nose with a rousing set of combinations. Sandy came out with a slight cut over the right eyebrow in the 12th, but other than that was not badly marked." -United Press Referee Ray Flores and commission physician Dr. Robert Laddon agreed that the bout should be stopped and did so at :59 seconds of the 13th round. When the bout ended the switchboard at the Cow Palace lit up with long-distance phone calls from television fans protesting Saddler's tactics. Unofficial scorecards (through 12 completed rounds) UP - 68-64 Saddler AP - 68-64 Saddler San Rafael Independent - 66-66 Even
