To build interest in their super fight for middleweight supremacy, Oscar De La Hoya and Middleweight Champion Bernard Hopkins share a billing. While Hopkins takes care of Robert Allen on the undercard, De La Hoya struggles with undefeated WBO Champion Felix Sturm. Oscar bangs away at Sturm's body for the first half of the fight, but the natural middleweight withstands the assault and beats De La Hoya to the punch the rest of the way. The judges, however, choose De La Hoya unanimously but by the slimmest of margins.
