This was a sad bout. Shavers had been to John's Hopkins Med School for retina trouble before the bout. Both boxers were slow and ineffective,and tired by round five. Shavers did score a right cut in round four and a knockdown in round six. He suffered a left eye lid cut in round one, and a brow cut in round four. At the end, Shavers the aging acorn was encrusted in his shell, taking Cobb's flailing overhand rights which lacked power and seemed to be 50% fouls. It was stopped at 2:19 of round eight. Now appearing as a replay on ESPN, the bout features commentators: the insightful Don Dunphy, a spirited Ken Norton, who is jousting with a rather subdued Gerry Cooney, who would TKO Norton in one round, within a year, ending his boxing career.
