Mikey Garcia vs Cornelius Lock

Laredo Energy Arena, Laredo, Texas, USA
126 lbs
John Schorle
Eliminator for the IBF Featherweight World Title
In a televised IBF featherweight title eliminator, a well fought and highly competitive bout, "Mikey" Garcia, 22, won the first six rounds with power shots, dropping Lock, 34, in the third. Lock tried hard and fought back courageously. Lock came back with accurate counter punching to do better in the seventh, and win rounds eight, nine and the first two minutes of round ten. Lock landed a counter right in the eighth which rocked Garcia, and it looked like Lock might pull even in the second half of the fight. However, Garcia landed serious power punches on Lock in the last minute of round ten, Lock also bleeding from a cut off the corner of the right eye, and Lock was in serious trouble but hung on to survive the round. Lock nodded he wanted to come out for round 11, and did so, but Garcia continued landing power shots on Lock at will. A right hook to the head by Garcia sent a bloody face, battered and beaten Lock on his back to the canvas, knocked out with no chance of getting up. The referee immediately ended the contest. The bout was over. Lock appeared okay after this bout and congratulated the winner. It should be noted Lock fought this bout to win but an accumulation of right crosses which landed took their toll on the long time contender. Lock lost for the third time in his last four bouts. Lock appeared to have the heart but no longer the skills to go twelve rounds. Garcia, 23-0, 19 kayos, got the winner of Orlando Salido vs Yuriorkis Gamboa WBA-IBF unification bout scheduled for September 11, 2010. Lock fell to 19-6-1, 12 kayos.
