Undisputed: Zab Judah vs. Carlos Baldomir
New York, NY
147 lbs
Arthur Mercante Jr.
WBC Welterweight Championship
In one of the biggest upsets in boxing history, Carlos Baldomir stuns undisputed Welterweight Champion Zab Judah by winning a unanimous decision on Judah's home turf of New York. Judah tries to intimidate Baldomir by hitting him on the hip during Referee Arthur Mercante Jr.'s instructions and builds a lead over the first six rounds of the fight. Unfazed, Baldomir hurts Judah badly with a right hand in the seventh round and alters the course of the fight, out hustling the champion over the second half of the bout. In a sickening display, only the WBC recognizes Baldomir's win while the IBF claims that Baldomir had been unwilling to pay the sanctioning fees that would earn him both titles.
