After the super fight with Mike Tyson is canceled due to Tyson suffering a rib injury, Heavyweight Champion Evander Holyfield brings his titles home to Atlanta in a defense against Bert Cooper. Holyfield puts Cooper down with a body shot in the first round, but Cooper proves resilient. He comes back to batter Holyfield into the ropes in the third round in what Referee Mills Lane rules the first knockdown of the champion's career by issuing a standing eight count; however, Holyfield comes back to hurt Cooper in the same round. Refusing to go down in his hometown, Holyfield hurts Cooper again in the fifth round before the action is stopped to repair a tear in his glove. After the delay, Holyfield finally stops the game challenger with a barrage of some twenty unanswered punches in the seventh round.
