Berto received an immediate chance at redemption after losing his WBC welterweight belt to Victor Ortiz in April, with another title shot in Biloxi against IBF holder Jan Zaveck. The fight was entertaining two-way action and even through four, but Berto shredded both of Zaveck's eye in the fifth, and despite Zaveck's protestation--"Nein! Nein!"--the fight was stopped between rounds by the ring physician due to bad cuts and swelling.
